Books on Kenya

A listing of books and travel guides about Kenya, East Africa and safaris.

If you have already read Jambo, Mama and are still hungry for a range of good books on Kenya we have compiled small list here with some short descriptions of what to expect. You can purchase any of them by clicking on the title of the cover of the book which will lead you directly to the order page on Amazon.com.

We were also able to convince Melinda Atwood (author of "Jambo, Mama - Memories of Africa") to submit her picks which are designated by her quotes.

Out of Africa - By Isak Dinesen

The heart of all books on Kenya. One of most amazing stories of one woman's adventures living in Kenya. Also well known for the Academy Award winning movie of the same name. If you are heading to Kenya and have not read this you are missing out.

Green Hills of Africa - Ernest Hemingway

Hemingways 1930's journal of his hunting safari in Kenya. An amazing book for the lovers of Hemingway's work but also a wonderful tale of what it was like to hunt big game on foot. This is a book you read while in your tent at night.

Born Free - By Joy Adamson

The true story of a woman who raises a wild lioness, the very famous Elsa. Another amazing story that be on every Kenya traveler and animal lovers must read list.

Lonely Planet Kenya - Hugh Finlay, Geoff Crowther

A very complete guide to Kenya with topics on everything and anything that you might encounter. A bit big to take with you but maybe a good read before you go.

West With the Night - Berly Markham

A wonderful true life tale of a young woman growing up in Kenya and later becoming a celebrated lady aviatrix. There has been some debate about whether she actually wrote the book or had considerable help from her writer husband, but it's a great story no matter who wrote it. This was made into a mini series called "Shadows on the Sun."

I Dreamed of Africa by Kukie Gallman

The very moving and often mystical story of an Italian expatriate and her life and losses while living in Kenya. Ms Gallman still lives in Kenya and recently opened her house and grounds to visitors. It is a very expensive "camp." If you love the book and want to stay there, you can do so. For a price.

Maasai by Tepilit Ole Saitoti, Carol Beckwith

Another coffee table book. But there are beautiful photographs of both Kenya and the Maasai tribes people. It is accurate and informative because the author is a Maasai.

The Flame Trees of Thika by Elsbeth Huxley

Another true story of a pioneering family in Kenyas early settler days. The tales of daily daring do and the insight into the various tribes that come through Elsbeth's young life are wonderful and make it a great read for young girls about to visit Kenya. The images are strong and the child's eye is true. It was made into a movie starring Hayley Mills and it shot at my friends the Craigs ranch at Lewa Downs

End of the Game by Peter Beard

If and when they ever publish Peters personal sketch/notebooks I will run out and buy them because he has such a wonderful eye for the strange and the fanciful. And this book hints t what he can do. It is also a wonderful documentation of the great elephant herds of Africa and the course of their demise. More than a coffee table book.

Safari : A Chronicle of Adventure by Bartle Bull

"Although there is considerable text, this is primarily a coffee table book with great pictures of safari living. It also contains one of the best descriptions of a buffalo charge and subsequent harassment of treed hunters I have ever read." - M. Atwood

Jambo, Mama - Memories of Africa - By Melinda Atwood

To cope with painful family circumstances following her mother’s death, Melinda Atwood did the only sensible thing: she ran away from home. Choosing a place as far away as possible, Atwood landed in Kenya, where she was planning to spend one year. She stayed for six, attempting to build a new life out of the wreckage of the old.

Out of Africa and Shadows on the Grass by Isak Dinesen

"With classic simplicity and a painter's feeling for atmosphere and detail, Isak Dinesen tells of the years she spent from 1914 to 1931 managing a coffee plantation in Kenya." - From Amazon.com

Dear Exile by by Hilary Liftin, Kate Montgomery

"A funny and moving story told through the letters of two women nurturing a friendship as they are separated by distance, experience, and time." - From Amazon.com

African Nights: True Stories from the Author of I Dreamed of Africa

"Gallmann's collection of true stories of her life in the Kenyan Highlands reads like a novel. One story flows into the next as Gallmann writes of her interactions with the Kenyan people, other European farmers, and African animals. Central to the stories are the customs and rituals of the Kenyan..." - From Booklist

Kilimanjaro & Mount Kenya : A Climbing and Trekking Guide

"Pre-trip planning, finding and hiring outfitters, and thorough information on dozens of trails are included in this comprehensive guide to the 30 top climbing and trekking routes on Mount Kilimanjaro and her sister peak, Mount Kenya color insert. 30 b&w photos."

Rough Guide to Kenya

For those willing to bet on the wild side!

Adventuring in East Africa

"A comprehensive guide to the adventures and pleasures of East Africa--a region boasting incredible scenic wonders, a rich tapestry of peoples and history, and some of the best wildlife viewing in the world. Illustrated. " - Amazon.com

Mission

"Mission is set largely in mid-1970s Kenya. Five characters, in five chapters each with several scenes, see a series of events from their own perspectives and thus influence one particular event to which individually they react differently. Four chapters are set in 1970s Kenya, but one, placed centrally in the structure, is thirty years on from the others and is set in London. The novel attempts to deal with the concept of identity, seen through filters of poverty, religion, politics and, underpinning everything, an idea of justice, examined from the perspective of each character’s individual, perhaps personal motivation, or mission." - Amazon.com
